Why cloth diapers are a good choice even on vacation

Many parents believe cloth diapers are only suitable for everyday use at home. However, our experience shows exactly the opposite.

We ourselves have traveled with cloth diapers for several years, whether camping, vacation apartment, hotel, or weekend trip. We have found that cloth diapers are often even more practical on the go than expected.

Especially in summer, families benefit from several advantages:

  • ☀️ Covers dry particularly quickly due to the warm temperatures.
  • 🌿 Breathable materials ensure a comfortable skin climate.
  • 💚 Less waste means fewer full trash cans in the hotel room or camper van.
  • 👃 No typical, unpleasant smell of used disposable diapers in the room

With the right preparation, nothing stands in the way of a relaxed vacation.

How many cloth diapers should I take on vacation?

We get this question particularly often.

Our recommendation is based on our own vacation experience:

1. Diapers

Pack exactly the number of diapers you need in everyday life.

Just think:

How often do you normally change your baby during the day?

This number forms your basis.

2. Plan for reserves

For each vacation day, we recommend taking an additional one more diaper as a reserve.

This way you are well prepared for longer excursions or small surprises.

3. Night diapers

Plan for one night diaper for each overnight stay.

If you don't have enough, you can simply take additional absorbent inserts or boosters instead.

4. Covers

Here, usually:

  • one cover per vacation day
  • plus about three spare covers

Covers dry very quickly and can easily be hand-washed if necessary.

For vacations longer than a week, we also recommend two additional covers for the night.

5. Pocket or all-in-one diapers

If you already use them, they are excellent as a practical reserve or for longer day trips.

The wet bag - your best travel companion

If we could only choose one accessory for vacation, it would clearly be the wet bag.

It practically replaces the diaper pail on the go.

The advantages:

  • waterproof
  • odor-proof
  • space-saving
  • reusable
  • easy to wash

Whether on the beach, at the outdoor pool, on an excursion, or in a restaurant, used cloth diapers can be transported hygienically and safely.

Vacation without a washing machine? No problem!

Not every vacation offers a washing machine.

However, this by no means implies that cloth diapers have to stay at home.

We have been using two simple methods for years.

Option 1: Vacations up to about seven or eight days

If you are traveling for a maximum of one week, the following approach is often sufficient:

  • Briefly rinse used diapers in the sink with clear water.
  • Then let them dry thoroughly, ideally in the sun.
  • Collect the dry diapers in the wet bag.
  • Wash them at home at 60 °C as usual.

By drying them, the diapers can be stored for several days without any problems.

Option 2: Longer trips without a washing machine

For trips longer than eight days, we recommend a simple hand wash.

Here's how it works:

  1. Dissolve a small amount of detergent in water.
  2. Carefully hand wash the cloth diapers.
  3. Use only a little detergent. There should be hardly any foam.
  4. Then rinse thoroughly with clear water.
  5. Let them dry in the sun.
  6. Afterward, the diapers can be used again as normal.

Important: For longer trips, it is still recommended to do a machine wash at 60 °C about once a month so that the diapers remain hygienically clean in the long term.

Swim diapers belong in every travel bag

Especially in summer, swim diapers are a must.

Our reusable swim diapers fulfill exactly the purpose a swim diaper should:

They reliably hold back large bowel movements without soaking up water.

This means they are comfortably light and can be used again and again, and can be easily cleaned thanks to the sewn-in mesh material if a large bowel movement does occur.

Cloth diapers also save money on vacation

Many first think of sustainability.

But cloth diapers offer even more advantages on the go:

  • less waste
  • no overflowing trash cans
  • no unpleasant diaper odor
  • fewer re-purchases on vacation
  • more relaxed travel

Especially on longer trips or camping vacations, this quickly becomes noticeable.

Our personal conclusion

After many vacations with cloth diapers, we can honestly say:

We wouldn't do without them on the go anymore.

With good preparation, a wet bag, and our simple tips, using cloth diapers works almost anywhere, even without a washing machine.

Vacations are meant to be relaxing, and that's exactly what cloth diapers brought us.

We also had them with us on bike tours, swimming trips, and even in the mountains while hiking.
