Modern cloth diapers have little in common with the cloth diapers of the past. No cumbersome folding, no safety pins, and no boiling: Today, there are well-thought-out cloth diaper systems that are easy to put on, conveniently wash, and flexibly adapt to a family's daily life.

However, the sheer variety can be overwhelming at first: What is the difference between a 2-in-1 system, an all-in-one, a pocket diaper, and the two-part system? Which system is suitable for on the go, which for the night, and which generates the least laundry?

Cloth diapers today: simple, modern, and suitable for everyday use

Many expectant parents only know cloth diapers from stories of previous generations. However, a lot has changed in recent years.

Modern cloth diapers feature practical snaps or hook-and-loop closures, absorbent materials, and waterproof outer layers. Many models are as easy to put on as a disposable diaper – with one crucial difference: After use, they don't end up in the trash, but in the washing machine.

Depending on the system, individual parts can be reused, absorbency can be adjusted, or complete diapers can be prepared before changing.

At Lumina, you will find four different systems:

You don't necessarily have to choose just one system. Many families combine different cloth diapers for home, on the go, childcare, and nighttime.

At Lumina, we have opted for snaps for all our diapers - you won't find any hook-and-loop closures. But why?

Hook-and-loop closures have a few significant disadvantages compared to snaps:

Yes, they are easier to handle and infinitely adjustable, but now come the reasons why we decided against hook-and-loop:

• They wear out significantly faster and replacing them involves sewing skills and a lot of effort.
• They constantly get linty and then need to be cleaned.
• The hook-and-loop fastening ability decreases over time.
• Unfortunately, they often rub against baby's skin and cause injuries.
• Your baby loves the sound and quickly figures out how to open the hook-and-loop.

The Systems

1. The Lumina 2-in-1 System: Flexible and Quick-Drying

The Lumina 2-in-1 system consists of a waterproof cover and one or more separate absorbent inserts.

The appropriate insert is simply placed in the cover. Then, the diaper is put on as usual and fastened with snaps.

Does the cover need to be washed after every diaper change?

No. If the cover is still clean after changing, it can be aired out and reused with a fresh absorbent insert. This means you need fewer covers and produce less laundry than with systems that are completely washed after each use.

Which inserts are suitable for the 2-in-1 system?

The absorbency can be individually adjusted to your child's age and needs. At Lumina, you'll find different materials and combination possibilities, including:

• additional hemp boosters

Some materials absorb liquid particularly quickly, while others can store a lot of it. By combining different inserts, you create a cloth diaper that perfectly suits your child and the respective changing interval. However, always remember to place something fast-absorbing against your child's skin, such as bamboo-cotton or cotton.

Materials with a high microfibre content should rather not be placed against your child's skin, as they simulate dryness and thereby restrict your child's feedback behavior and influence toilet training or natural feedback.

The 2-in-1 system is particularly suitable for families who want flexible diapering, to swap out individual parts, and customize their absorbency combination.

2. The All-in-One cloth diaper: everything in one diaper

With the All-in-One – AIO for short – the waterproof outer layer and the absorbent inner core are permanently connected.

You don't need to add a separate cover and don't have to reassemble inserts before each change. The complete diaper is put on similar to a disposable diaper and washed after use. You only need to pull the additional hemp absorbent insert out of the back pocket before washing, so that it is thoroughly washed and your diaper can also dry faster - this is sewn directly into the diaper.

Who is an All-in-One suitable for?

All-in-One cloth diapers are particularly popular with families looking for the most uncomplicated system possible. They are also well-suited for:

• grandparents
• babysitters
• daycare providers
• daycare or preschool
• on the go
• families who want to start with cloth diapers

The diaper can be prepared and stored on the shelf or in the changing bag, ready for immediate use.

Advantages of the All-in-One

• very easy to put on
• no additional cover necessary
• all components remain together
• uncomplicated for caregivers
• well-suited for on the go
• similar changing process to a disposable diaper

Since the entire diaper is washed after each use, it generates a bit more laundry than the 2-in-1 system. All-in-Ones also often take longer to dry because all components are connected, and they last shorter compared to the 2-in-1 system, as the complete diaper is always washed at 60°C after each use, which the cover material doesn't like and thus wears out faster, and they are washed significantly more often than just covers.

Many families therefore use them specifically for childcare, on the go, or when diapering needs to be particularly quick.

3. The Pocket Diaper: prepped and individually fillable

"Pocket" means pocket. A pocket diaper has an opening inside into which one or more absorbent inserts are slipped.

The inserts are thus securely held in the diaper and do not slip during application. A pre-filled pocket diaper is used just as easily as an All-in-One or a disposable diaper.

After changing, the entire diaper goes into the wash, and the absorbent inserts are removed beforehand.

What's special about a pocket diaper?

The biggest advantage is the flexible absorbency. You decide which inserts go into the pocket.

Depending on your needs, you can, for example, use absorbent inserts made of organic cotton, bamboo, or bamboo charcoal and increase the absorbency with an additional booster.

Pocket diapers can be prepared after washing. For the next change, the ready-to-use diaper only needs to be taken from the shelf or changing bag and put on.

The pocket diaper is ideal for families who want a prepared complete diaper but still desire flexibility with the absorbent inserts.

4. The Two-Part System: especially absorbent

The two-part system consists of an absorbent fitted diaper and a separate waterproof cover.

First, the fitted diaper is put on. It absorbs liquid not only in the crotch but all around. Over it comes a cover, which ensures that clothes and bedding stay dry.

When is the two-part system useful?

Due to its large absorbent surface, this system is particularly suitable for:

• nighttime
• longer sleep phases
• high absorbency needs
• longer car journeys
• longer diaper change intervals
• when particularly high leak protection is desired

The absorbency can be expanded with additional inserts or boosters and adapted to your child. Lumina's night diaper with the already included absorbent insert offers you even more extra volume right away, as it was designed for nighttime use.

Advantages of the Two-Part System

Fitted diapers take a bit longer to dry due to their high absorbency. Therefore, it's important to plan the required number in line with your washing and drying routine.
