How to use Lumina 2-in-1 cloth diapers correctly - explained step by step

The Lumina 2-in-1 cloth diapers are the perfect choice for parents who prioritize sustainability without sacrificing comfort and flexibility. In this post, we'll show you how to use them correctly and easily.

What is the Lumina 2-in-1 system?

Our Lumina 2-in-1 system consists of:

• Waterproof covers with front and back flaps made of PUL (flaps made of fleece and leg cuffs made of Minky)
• Inserts, which are simply laid in - combinable to suit your child's needs

You can reuse the cover multiple times by simply changing the inserts after use. This saves washing and time! You change the cover after one day or if it is soiled.

 

Step 1: Prepare the diaper

1. Insert the insert - Place the insert in the center of the cover and slide it into the front and back flaps
2. Optional: Additional absorbent insert - For larger urine volumes or heavy wetters, it is recommended to place an additional insert (booster) under the fast-absorbing insert.

 

Step 2: Put on the diaper

1. Place under the baby - Place the prepared diaper under the baby's bottom. The upper flap should end just or well below the navel, then close it
2. Adjust leg cuffs - When the diaper is closed, check that no absorbent material is sticking out anywhere and make sure that the leg cuffs fit snugly and do not cut in. "Push" the leg cuffs into your child's crotch
3. Check at the belly - The perfect fit of the diaper at the belly is when there is a 2-finger-width space between the waistband and your child's belly. The diaper should have a straight fit when viewed from the side.

 

 

Step 3: After use

1. Remove the insert - If the diaper is wet or dirty, remove the insert. If the cover has remained clean, you can continue to use it
2. Storage - Used inserts go into a wet bag or pail liner. Covers that are dirty can be put with your normal colored laundry. 
3. Cleaning with stool - if stool has gotten onto the cover, remove it before washing (only applies to solid food stool)
4. Washing - Inserts at 60°C on a full wash cycle / Covers ideally at 40°C with colored laundry (see our blog post on cloth diaper washing), use a cloth diaper-suitable detergent!!

 

What about bowel movements?

As long as you are exclusively breastfeeding, you don't need to worry, because breast milk stool is water-soluble and odorless.

However, if you are supplementing with formula or follow-on formula, the stool is no longer water-soluble and you will need a diaper liner.

At the latest when introducing solid foods, you must insert a diaper liner to make it easier or completely remove the no longer water-soluble stool. However, if stool has still gotten onto the insert or cover, please remove it before storage and washing. 

 

Tips for everyday use

• Before first use - Wash inserts, after a total of 8-10 washes your inserts will have reached their maximum absorbency
• On the go - Use a small wet bag for your used and/or clean diapers
• Diaper change - This should be done after 3 hours at the latest if there is soiling, it is best to change based on need and directly after soiling (this also leads to better feedback behavior and faster potty training) / Newborns should be changed more frequently, about every 1 - 1.5 hours
